Working with Students

I have benefited from supportive supervisors and mentors who saw my potential, invested in my development, and used their positions to provide opportunities to grow my abilities and confidence. I try to pay that support forward by working with enthusiastic, promising undergraduate students.

DEI statement: It should be the mission of all to create an inclusive workplace that promotes and values diversity. In science, as with all academic disciplines, this will only become a reality when all students irrespective of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical or mental status, or anything else that isn’t a direct measure of enthusiasm, hard-work, and talent, have access to the same opportunities and support. Diversity - including neurodiversity - makes the world a much more interesting, productive, and innovative place.

Esthersita Hernandez

Esthersita is an final year undergraduate student (20/21) at the University of Belize. She is using optical tools to investigate the relationship between organic matter composition and oxygen consumption in a sub-tropical aquatic setting.

Supervisors: Abel Carrias and Joaquin Urbina (UB), Stacey Felgate (UoS), and Chris Barry (CEH)

Ian Oliva

Ian is a final year undergraduate student (20/21) at the University of Belize. His thesis project uses Loss on Ignition (LoI) and environmental data to investigate the drivers of particulate matter export in the Belize River Watershed.

Supervisors: Joaquin Urbina and Abel Carrias (UB), Stacey Felgate (UoS), and Chris Barry (CEH).
